The probe into the mysterious death of Assam’s beloved singer Zubeen Garg has taken a major turn, with three well-known names now under the scanner. Shyamkanu Mahanta, a key organiser linked to cultural events in the region, along with musician Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and singer Amritprabha Mahanta, have been arrested by Assam Police and the CID as part of the ongoing investigation.

In a surprising legal twist, Shyamkanu Mahanta had approached the Supreme Court of India just before his arrest. While in Singapore on September 30, he filed a petition through advocate Raj Kamal, seeking legal protection in anticipation of possible detention once he returned to India. A day later, on October 1, he landed in New Delhi and was taken into custody by Assam Police.

The case escalated further when police pressed fresh murder charges against Mahanta and Zubeen Garg’s manager Siddharth Sharma. Special DGP (CID) Munna Prasad Gupta confirmed that Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) has been included in the FIR. This section carries the harshest penalties under Indian law—either the death sentence or life imprisonment along with a fine.

Gupta told reporters that while investigations are advancing, he could not disclose many details at this stage. The inclusion of murder charges, however, signals the seriousness with which authorities are treating the case.

On October 2, musician Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and singer Amritprabha Mahanta were also arrested after being interrogated by the CID for six days. Investigators revealed that both were abroad in Singapore during the period of Zubeen Garg’s death, a coincidence that is now being examined closely. Their arrest has widened the scope of the investigation, making it one of the most closely watched criminal cases in recent times.

The involvement of well-known cultural personalities has sent shockwaves across Assam’s music industry. Fans and fellow artists have expressed disbelief and concern as the names of respected figures continue to surface in connection with the case.

The death of Zubeen Garg has captured public attention in an unprecedented way. In Guwahati markets, Siliguri trade hubs, and even smaller towns across Assam, conversations around the case dominate daily life. People continue to play his songs in shops, tea stalls, and buses, keeping his memory alive while demanding clarity on what really happened.

The case has also stirred debates on social media, with supporters of the accused calling for fairness while many others have demanded swift justice. The arrests have only intensified public curiosity, as every new development makes headlines both within and outside Assam.

For Shyamkanu Mahanta, the petition he filed in the Supreme Court shows that he anticipated legal troubles before stepping back into India. Now, his legal team is expected to seek bail through lower courts, a process likely to face close public and judicial scrutiny.
