The Guwahati Press Club organised the first-ever GPC Women Journalists’ Conference at its premises in Guwahati. The event saw the participation of many women journalists from different media organisations, who gathered to share their stories, ideas, and concerns related to journalism.

The conference was formally inaugurated by Sangeeta Barooah Pisharoty, the newly elected President of the Press Club of India. She addressed the gathering in the presence of a large number of women journalists.

In her speech, Pisharoty said that journalism is closely linked with the Constitution of India. She said that journalism is not only a source of employment, but also a responsibility toward the people. She said that the main work of a journalist is to ask questions. According to her, journalists should continue to ask questions without fear, so that the rights and interests of the public are protected.

The programme was also attended by noted writer Maini Mohanta and Pratidin Time’s Executive Director, Smitakshi B. Goswami. Their presence added importance to the event, as both have been connected with literature and media for a long time.

After the formal inauguration, three discussion sessions were held for the participants. These were titled “My Life, My Story”, “Me and My Journalism”, and “Challenges and Opportunities for Women Journalists in the Workplace”. These sessions gave women journalists an opportunity to speak openly about their lives and profession.

Many participants shared personal experiences from their career in journalism. They spoke about how they started their journey, the difficulties they faced, and the changes they have seen in the media world over the years. Some also spoke about the need for mental strength and family support while working in a demanding profession.

In the discussions on journalism, speakers highlighted the importance of truth, neutrality, and fairness in news reporting. They said journalists must always remember their duty toward society.

The final session focused on challenges faced by women journalists. Participants spoke about issues such as workplace pressure, safety concerns, and the need for equal opportunities. At the same time, they also noted that more women are now taking leadership roles in media organisations.
