A strange and worrying development has come to light in Guwahati city. Residents in parts of the city have discovered that the names of unknown people have been added to their addresses in the official voter list. This has raised serious questions about how voter records are being verified, and whether the Election Commission and government authorities are taking these issues seriously enough.

The matter came to notice in the Taibullah Path area near Dighali Pukhuri, under the New Guwahati constituency. The house in question is House No. 46 at Mohanagari. The owner of the house is Abdul Munin Choudhary, who lives there with his family. However, when the family recently checked the voter list, they were shocked to find the names of people who do not live there and have no connection to the family. According to the records, four to five completely unrelated individuals have been shown as residents of House No. 46.

The residents say that when the Booth Level Officer (BLO) came to verify the voter list, they noticed the presence of these unknown names. This has caused confusion and concern among the genuine residents. They want to know how such names were added to their address without their knowledge.

The house owner also pointed out that his other house numbers — 44 and 45 — are correctly recorded with the actual residents listed there. Only House No. 46 shows extra names of people like Tinku Prasad, Rinku Prasad, Neha Shah, Phul Devi and Anjana Boruah, none of whom live there or have ever lived there. The family is asking a very simple question: How did these names appear under their address?

Family members have also explained that normally, when one spouse is listed under a particular house number, the rest of the family is also listed under the same address. But in this case, the names added do not belong to the household, and the people are not known in the locality. This has made people suspicious that the voter list may have been tampered with or used wrongly.

When the house owner contacted the Election Commission office, he was told to wait and then submit an application. Online, he saw several forms, including forms for deletion, correction and shifting. But he asks a valid question: how can he officially object when he does not even know who these people are or where they actually live?

This is not an isolated case. Similar problems have reportedly been found in nearby houses as well. In one example, a house with only two real residents still shows additional names of unrelated people in the voter list. Residents fear that this may not be a small mistake, but part of a much larger problem.
