A case of voter card fraud has surfaced from the border areas of Assam and Meghalaya, exposing how one couple allegedly managed to hold voter identity cards from both states and misuse them for years. The incident came to light after a Booth Level Officer (BLO) in Meghalaya lodged a formal complaint before the Election Commission of India.
According to the complaint, the accused couple, Jawaharlal Prasad and his wife Shakuntala Prasad, are registered as voters in both Meghalaya’s 54-Mahendraganj Assembly Constituency (Polling Station No. 43) and Assam’s 8-Dhubri Assembly Constituency (Polling Station No. 266). Their EPIC numbers in Meghalaya are TNZ0000349 and KHV0621607, while in Assam they are registered under DHL7734807 and DHL7734830.
Reports suggest that the couple moved to Meghalaya about 10 to 15 years ago but continued to retain their names in the Assam voter list since 2005. They are accused of providing false information to obtain voter cards in Meghalaya while their names still appeared on the electoral roll in Assam.
The complaint, filed by BLO Sarafat Hussain, states that both Jawaharlal and Shakuntala have allegedly been voting in both states during elections. It is also alleged that they used their Meghalaya voter identity cards to avail government benefits and welfare schemes meant for residents of the state.
Further allegations have surfaced that their daughter used a Scheduled Caste (SC) certificate from Meghalaya to gain admission to a medical college. Jawaharlal Prasad, too, is accused of using the same SC certificate to obtain benefits as a contractor in Meghalaya. The BLO has called for immediate investigation and strict action against the couple for deceiving the Election Commission and misusing government privileges.
