A 24-year-old student from Tripura, who had been receiving treatment for more than two weeks, died in a hospital in Dehradun on Friday after a violent attack earlier this month. The student, identified as Anjel Chakma, was an MBA student in the city. He was reportedly stabbed after he and his younger brother were targeted with racial remarks. His brother, Michael, is still in hospital and is said to be in serious condition.

The incident happened on December 9 in the Selaqui area of Dehradun. According to reports, the brothers had gone out to buy groceries when a group of men stopped them and allegedly mocked them because of how they looked. The attackers are said to have used racist language and questioned their identity. When Anjel protested and told them they were Indians and not foreigners, the argument turned violent.

A national daily quoted Anjel as saying before the attack, “We are not Chinese. We are Indians. What proof do we need to give?” Moments later, the situation escalated and both brothers were stabbed.

Anjel was admitted to hospital with critical injuries and remained under treatment for over 14 days. Despite efforts by doctors, he passed away on Friday. His death has led to anger and sadness, especially among students and communities from the Northeast living in different parts of the country.

After the news of his death spread, protests were reported in Tripura and among students in Dehradun. Many people have demanded a fair and thorough investigation. Several groups have also called for stronger action against racial discrimination faced by people from the Northeast.

The incident has again highlighted concerns over safety and racial abuse faced by students studying outside their home states. Community leaders and student bodies have appealed for peace but have also urged authorities to ensure justice for the victim and protection for others.

Police have reportedly begun an investigation and are identifying those involved in the attack. Further details are awaited as the case develops.
