A strong reaction has come from the Tipra Indigenous Students Federation following the death of Angel Chakma. Speaking in Agartala, the president of the student body, Sajra Debbarma, said the incident reflects a larger pattern of suffering and neglect faced by people in the northeastern region of India.
In his statement, Debbarma said that what is happening in the Northeast is not new and has been going on for many years. He said the death of Angel Chakma should not be seen as only one person’s death, but as a loss felt by the entire region. According to him, the incident has deeply hurt the emotions and dignity of the people of the Northeast.
Debbarma made a direct appeal to the Central Government. He said that the people of the region want respect, dignity, and equal treatment. If that cannot be ensured, he added, then people in the Northeast may feel that they should be allowed to govern themselves. His words expressed anger, sadness, and frustration over what many here believe is long-standing neglect.
He also said that this is a very serious matter and cannot be ignored. The student leader stated that the death of Angel Chakma has united many student organisations across the Northeast. He said they are all together demanding justice and accountability.
Debbarma called for strict punishment for those responsible. He said no one should be spared and urged the Government of India to take immediate action. According to him, strong legal steps would help restore faith among people who currently feel unheard and sidelined.
