A fire incident has left a village in Kaliabor in deep shock after a three-month-old infant lost his life and two others were injured when flames swept through a house late on Monday. The incident took place at No. 1 Borghuli, in Rajab Ali village under the Kaliabor subdivision, where a massive blaze broke out at the residence of local resident Matibur Rahman.
According to local sources, the fire started suddenly and spread very fast, giving the family and neighbours little time to react. By the time the flames were brought under control, two houses were completely destroyed. Villagers said that everything inside the homes was reduced to ashes, including household goods, clothes, furniture and essential documents.
It has been reported that cash worth around ₹2.5 lakh was also burnt in the fire. Along with this, important papers belonging to the family were destroyed. People in the area estimate that the total loss may be more than ₹20 lakh, as both houses were fully damaged and nothing could be saved from inside.
Fire tenders from Ambagan and Kaliabor rushed to the location after receiving the alert. The fire personnel made efforts to douse the flames and finally managed to bring the situation under control. However, despite their efforts, the most heartbreaking loss had already occurred. The three-month-old baby of Matibur Rahman could not be saved and reportedly died due to severe burn injuries.
Villagers gathered at the site soon after the fire broke out and tried to help the family. Many residents said the blaze spread quickly, and there was panic as people tried to rescue those trapped inside and move nearby households to safety. The sudden tragedy has left the quiet village in mourning, with neighbours expressing grief and shock over the loss of the infant.
Meanwhile, police personnel from Chulung and Uluwali outposts reached the site and have started an investigation into the incident. They are trying to find out how the fire started and whether it was caused by an electrical fault, a cooking accident or some other reason. Officials are also assessing the damage and speaking to witnesses.
An executive magistrate also visited the location and has taken necessary administrative steps following the incident
