The One-Man Judicial Commission that is looking into the mysterious death of noted Assamese singer and composer Zubeen Garg in Singapore has decided to extend the time for people to submit their testimonies. The commission, headed by Justice Soumitra Saikia of the Gauhati High Court, announced that the new deadline for receiving notarised affidavits will now be December 12, 2025. The earlier deadline has been pushed forward after the commission received several requests from individuals who said they needed more time to prepare their statements.
The decision was formally issued through a detailed public notice and an urgent communication from the commission’s secretary, Aroop Pathak, ACS. The notice has been sent to the Directorate of Information and Public Relations, Assam, asking for wide publicity through newspapers, radio, television, and digital platforms. The commission has requested that the notice be published prominently for three consecutive days so that all concerned persons are made aware of the extension.
The Assam government had constituted this one-man commission on October 3, 2025, under The Commissions of Inquiry Act, 1952. The mandate of the commission is to examine every aspect surrounding Zubeen Garg’s death in Singapore on September 19, 2025. The terms of reference include finding out the facts and circumstances leading to his death, understanding the sequence of events before and after the incident, and examining whether there were any lapses, negligence or wrongdoing by any individual, authority or institution. The commission has also been tasked with probing whether any external factor or foul play was involved.
Earlier, on October 17, the commission had issued a notice calling upon anyone with knowledge about the case to submit their statements through a properly notarised affidavit. The new notice explains that the deadline is being extended to ensure that all relevant information is collected in a complete and fair manner. The commission has said that any person who wants to submit a statement must also include a list of documents they wish to rely on, along with originals or authenticated copies.
The extended submission will be received at the office of the One-Man Inquiry Commission located at the Assam Khadi and Village Industries Board premises on Maniram Dewan Road at Chandmari in Guwahati. Submissions will be accepted on working days from 10:30 AM to 4:00 PM, except Sundays.
