Amid Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s two-day official visit to Assam, the state government has announced the deferment of scheduled talks with Karbi leaders. The postponement was confirmed by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who said the decision was taken due to logistical reasons linked to the Prime Minister’s programme in the state.
In a statement shared on social media, Sarma clarified that the discussions planned for the day between the Assam government and representatives of the Karbi community had been temporarily put on hold. He stressed that the deferment should not be seen as a lack of intent or interest and assured that the talks would be rescheduled at the earliest.
“I wish to assure the respected members of the Karbi Samaj that their concerns are important to us,” the Chief Minister said, adding that dialogue remains the preferred way to address issues raised by the community.
According to the Chief Minister, the postponement was purely a matter of timing, as senior officials and security arrangements were fully engaged due to the Prime Minister’s visit. He stated that once the visit concludes, fresh dates for the talks will be announced without delay.
The assurance comes at a time when the Karbi Anglong region continues to remain in focus over various socio-political and developmental matters. Community leaders have been seeking discussions with the government on issues related to development, representation, and long-standing local concerns.
