The investigation into the death of popular Assamese singer Zubeen Garg in Singapore has entered a crucial stage, with the Special Investigation Team (SIT) stepping up its efforts to gather every possible detail related to the case. On Tuesday, officials from four Bihu committees — including the Mangaldoi Rongali Bihu Sanmilan and the Ghilamara Central Rongali Bihu Sanmilan in Lakhimpur — appeared before the SIT at the Crime Investigation Department (CID) office in Ulubari to record their statements.
According to sources, the SIT questioned the representatives mainly about their contracts with Zubeen Garg and his manager, Siddhartha Sharma, for various stage performances during the Rongali Bihu celebrations earlier this year. The officials were also asked to provide information on payment details, agreements, and correspondence made during event coordination. Investigators are trying to determine whether any financial or professional dispute could be linked to the sequence of events that preceded the singer’s sudden death in Singapore.
SIT head and Special Director General of Police (CID), Munna Prasad Gupta, told reporters that the team has already recorded statements from more than 90 individuals, including artists, event organisers, and close associates of the late singer. Gupta further stated that several other witnesses are yet to be examined. “We have also collected statements from members of different Bihu committees and verified the documents related to their shows,” he said, adding that the team is working closely with the Singapore Police, who are reviewing certain aspects raised by the SIT.
The SIT is meticulously analysing the chain of communication and financial transactions between the singer, his manager, and various event organisers. Every lead is being verified to ensure that no angle remains unexplored. The investigation has reportedly gathered momentum over the past few weeks as new witnesses continue to come forward with information that could assist the probe.
Gupta assured that the investigation is progressing swiftly and transparently, and once the inquiry is completed, a detailed report will be submitted to the court. Meanwhile, the probe into case number 19/2025, registered against event organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, is also in progress.
