The police action on Otcober 15 during the transfer of the five accused in the Zubeen Garg death case to Baksa Jail has left many local residents shocked and disappointed. The incident, which occurred just days before the Diwali festival, has triggered widespread anger among the locals with several youths reportedly fleeing their homes in fear.
Speaking to reporter, an elderly RSS worker from Baksa said he was deeply saddened by the turn of events. “We are very disappointed. It is very unfortunate that this incident took place when such notorious persons, accused in the Zubeen Garg case, were brought to our Baksa Jail,” he said. “Baksa is a pure place, a pure land. But bringing these accused here has made our land impure. It is very disheartening for the residents of this area.”
He further described the situation at the jail as completely peaceful before the police action. “We were sitting there peacefully, shouting slogans like ‘Joi Zubeen Da’. None of us were doing anything wrong. Suddenly, Additional SP Gitartha Dev Sarma took a baton from one of the police personnel and started a lathi charge. The public did nothing to provoke this. The ASP should have known the consequences of his actions,” he said.
The RSS worker also expressed concern about the police forcing people into actions they did not intend. “Police personnel compelled us, Zubeen’s fans, to throw and pelt stones. I was present at the scene. We did nothing wrong. On what grounds did the ASP start the baton charge? Such an educated and senior officer should answer this,” he said.
He demanded accountability from the government, urging action against the police officer responsible. “We request the government to suspend such police officers and conduct a proper investigation. ASP Gitartha Dev Sarma must be held responsible for the incident. If he had not acted the way he did, this entire situation would not have happened,” he added.
