Responsible leaders must speak carefully: Pradyut Bordoloi on Rejaul Karim’s resignation Responsible leaders must speak carefully: Pradyut Bordoloi on Rejaul Karim’s resignation

MP Pradyut Bordoloi today reacted to the resignation of minority leader Rejaul Karim Sarkar from the Congress, saying that no responsible person should make statements that create division in society. Bordoloi said he was hurt by the way his remarks were portrayed and stressed that his intention was never to target any individual or community.

Speaking on the issue, Bordoloi said he did not understand why fingers were being pointed at him. He said he did not appreciate the manner in which Rejaul Karim had placed his statement before the public. Bordoloi added that he had even informed the party president that leaders belonging to any community must speak carefully, as careless words can harm social harmony. He said if Rejaul Karim felt hurt by his reaction and chose to resign, then it was unfortunate.

Clarifying his stand, Bordoloi said his remarks were not against any individual but were meant as a general reminder. He said this principle applies not only to the Congress but to all political parties. “Nobody should speak in a way that divides society,” he said, adding that unity and mutual respect were essential in public life.

Bordoloi further rejected allegations that he had called Rejaul Karim a “Chief Minister’s agent.” He said he never used such words and only stated that party members should be careful while speaking in public. He maintained that his statement was limited to this point and nothing more.

Defending the Congress, Bordoloi said the party has always stood for society and communities. He referred to the legacy of Gopinath Bordoloi, saying that no one had worked as much as him for the upliftment of society and different communities in Assam. He also recalled the role played by Congress leaders before and during the British period, stating that the party had consistently fought for the rights and welfare of the people.

The reaction from Bordoloi came after former All Assam Minorities Students’ Union leader Rejaul Karim Sarkar resigned from the Indian National Congress, citing serious differences with the party’s leadership in Assam.

In his resignation letter dated January 14, 2026, addressed to Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi, Sarkar said he had joined the Congress because of its secular outlook, inclusive ideology and commitment to constitutional values. However, he said recent remarks and positions taken by senior leaders had left him deeply disappointed.

Sarkar wrote that statements made by Assam Congress Legislature Party leader Debabrata Saikia and MP Pradyut Bordoloi caused him “moral and ideological pain.” He claimed that these remarks had affected both his motivation and his public image, making it difficult for him to continue in the party.

In the letter, Sarkar went further and accused the two leaders of behaving like “BJP agents,” stating that their conduct within the party forced him to take the decision to resign. “In these circumstances, I find it difficult to continue my association with the party,” he wrote, resigning from the primary membership of the Congress with immediate effect, while still wishing the party well.
