A torchlight rally was taken out at Agia in Goalpara district last evening demanding the inclusion of the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. The rally was organised by the All Rabha Students’ Union, the All Rabha Women Council and the Sixth Schedule Demand Committee.
According to the organisers, the demand for inclusion has been raised for a long time, but the community feels that the issue has not been given proper attention by the government so far. People from nearby areas also joined the rally, and many participants held placards stressing the need for constitutional protection for the Rabha Hasong area.
Leaders of the three organisations said that the Rabha community has been placing this demand for several years and that the Sixth Schedule status would help protect the identity, culture and rights of the Rabha people. They also stated that development in tribal areas can take place in a more structured way if the area is brought under the Sixth Schedule.
Sources from the organisations said that a tripartite meeting was earlier held in this regard ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. The leaders said that the meeting discussed several aspects related to the demand and the current programme was organised to remind the government about their long-pending issue.
