A devastating car explosion shook Delhi’s historic Red Fort area on Monday evening, killing at least ten people and injuring several others. The blast occurred at around 6:52 pm when a slow-moving Hyundai i20, reportedly carrying three occupants and bearing a Haryana number plate, stopped at a red light near the Red Fort Metro Station. The force of the explosion was so strong that nearby vehicles were damaged, streetlights were shattered, and panic spread across the crowded area.
Officials confirmed that the blast originated from the rear of the car, and no nails, wires, or burn marks were found on the victims, indicating a sudden and intense explosion. At least eight vehicles were damaged, and multiple people suffered injuries from flying glass and debris. Emergency services, including around fifteen fire engines, rushed to the scene to bring the fire under control and assist the injured.
Authorities acted swiftly to ensure safety across the city. The borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh were placed on high alert, and security at Delhi Metro stations, government buildings, IGI Airport, and other sensitive locations was immediately tightened. The Chandni Chowk market, near the blast site, was ordered to remain closed on Tuesday as precautionary measures continued.
At Lok Nayak Jay Prakash Narayan (LNJP) Hospital, ten victims were declared dead on arrival, while several others were admitted in critical condition. Hospital staff worked round-the-clock to manage the emergency, providing treatment to the injured and coordinating further medical support.
A Special Cell team, along with forensic experts, began examining the remains of the vehicle to trace its registration and investigate the cause of the explosion. The National Security Guard (NSG) and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) have also joined the probe, assessing whether a larger conspiracy could be behind the incident.
Witnesses described the blast as “terrifying,” with one saying, “I fell thrice and thought I would die. The street lights shattered, and cars were flung meters away.” The intensity of the explosion left the area in chaos, and authorities are urging citizens to remain calm while investigations continue.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi reviewed the situation and spoke with Home Minister Amit Shah to get updates on the ongoing probe and security measures. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal called the blast “deeply worrying” and emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to prevent any lapses in the city’s security. Former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia urged calm and unity, stressing that fear and terror can only be countered by collective resolve and vigilance.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have appealed to the public to report any suspicious activity. For now, Delhi remains on high alert as security forces maintain a strong presence across sensitive areas in the capital.
