Politics of intimidation won’t work: Gogoi challenges Chief Minister Himanta Politics of intimidation won’t work: Gogoi challenges Chief Minister Himanta

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Gaurav Gogoi today criticised Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and said that he does not fear the Chief Minister’s warnings.Speaking to journalists in his home constituency Jorhat, Gogoi said that the people of Assam are no longer concerned about what the Chief Minister says, and added that he was personally unaffected by the “threats and intimidation.” He said, “Let him keep giving threats every day. The people are losing interest in such statements. I do not care about them either.”

Taking a direct dig at the Chief Minister, Gogoi said that when the public hears such language from leaders, it reminds them of certain expressions popularised by Assamese singer Zubeen Garg. Although he did not repeat the exact words, his comment appeared to be a sarcastic reference to the growing public dissatisfaction with aggressive political remarks.

Gogoi also said that the politics of fear and threats will not continue for long in Assam. He said the Chief Minister may try different things over the next four months, but once he is out of power, he will have to live among the very people whom he is trying to intimidate now. Gogoi said that the ruling government will face consequences when people vote.

Gogoi also responded to questions about the charge sheet filed in the Zubeen Garg attack case. He claimed that many senior advocates have said the charge sheet appears weak. Gogoi alleged that the document seems to be prepared in such a way that it protects Shyamkanu Mahanta, who is known to be close to the Chief Minister. He also said that names of other important people, who should have been named as accused, were not included.

Gogoi said that many people in Assam still doubt whether Zubeen Garg will get justice. He added that public trust has not been restored in the case. He said that unless all the persons involved are named and investigated properly, people will continue to suspect political interference.
