A joint team of opposition parties in Assam is expected to meet Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on today to submit a memorandum regarding the recent violence in West Karbi Anglong district. The delegation includes senior leaders from the Congress, CPI(M), Raijor Dal, AJP and Left parties.
Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly, Debabrata Saikia, told reporters on Tuesday that the team had already sought an appointment with the Governor for 4 pm. He said the opposition was deeply concerned about the situation in Kheroni, where two people died and several others were injured during recent clashes.
Saikia alleged that the state government had failed to maintain law and order in the district. According to him, the families of those killed and injured should receive compensation as per existing government norms. He also said the delegation would demand a detailed inquiry into the incidents, along with assessment of losses and relief for affected residents.
The opposition visit follows ground-level interactions with villagers and local organisations in the affected areas. Party representatives said people were living in fear and uncertainty after the violence, and many had complained to them about administrative lapses. They said the memorandum to the Governor will highlight these issues and urge immediate action.
The leaders who form part of the delegation include Congress MLAs Shivamani Bora, Bhaskar Baruah, Diganta Barman, Wajed Ali Choudhury, Nurul Huda, Rashid Mandal, Rakibuddin Ahmed and Pradip Sarkar. CPI(M) MLA Manoranjan Talukdar, Raijor Dal MLA Akhil Gogoi and AJP leader Jagadish Bhuyan are also in the group. Several senior Congress leaders such as Pradyut Bhuyan, Ghana Chetia, Nasir Khan, Raman Jha and Suman Kalyan Bora are accompanying them, along with West Karbi Anglong District Congress president Augustine Inghi and party spokesperson Rupak Das. Others in the delegation include Cherisma Rongpipi, Russell Hussain of Raijor Dal and CPI(ML) leader Bibek Das.
During their visit to the affected locations, members of the delegation said the violence appeared to be the outcome of a larger political conspiracy. They alleged that the ruling establishment was trying to divide communities and regions for political benefit by encouraging mistrust between hill and plain areas. According to them, this “divide and rule” approach had worsened long-standing social and land-related concerns.
The opposition leaders also criticised the BJP for demanding President’s Rule in West Bengal over what they described as comparatively smaller incidents, while not taking strong steps when serious violence occurred within Assam. They said the state government, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council had failed to manage the situation in time.
Saikia further claimed that irregularities and corruption involving Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council Chief Executive Member Tuliram Ronghang had contributed to growing unrest in the area. He said matters related to PGR and VGR land needed careful and transparent handling during eviction operations so that people did not feel unfairly targeted.
He also said that the incident of arson at Ronghang’s residence, followed by the demolition of the same house by his family members using bulldozers, should be brought under the purview of any formal inquiry. According to Saikia, a neutral and complete investigation is essential to restore people’s confidence.
The opposition parties said their only demand was that the truth should come out and justice should be ensured. They stated that the Governor, as the constitutional head of the state, should look into the matter seriously and advise the government to take corrective steps to prevent further unrest.
