A joint team of opposition parties in Assam on Wednesday met Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya in Guwahati and submitted a detailed memorandum regarding the recent violence in West Karbi Anglong. The delegation said the incidents reflected a serious collapse of law and order in the Sixth Schedule area and urged immediate intervention from the Governor.

The delegation had visited the affected Kheroni Bazar area under Donkamukam Revenue Circle on December 30 to meet local residents and assess the situation. In the memorandum, they said the unrest began after indigenous tribal residents, including Karbi groups, demanded eviction of alleged encroachers from Village Grazing Reserve and Professional Grazing Reserve lands. These lands fall under the jurisdiction of the Autonomous District Council.

According to the memorandum, the situation worsened after hunger-striking protesters were reportedly removed forcibly late at night and taken to Guwahati Medical College for medical tests. The delegation said such action angered the public and triggered protests and clashes at Kheroni (Thong Nokbe) Bridge, during which police allegedly fired blanks and aerial shots. Several people were injured.

Shops, houses and vehicles were later damaged or burnt. The delegation said many families lost their livelihoods and were still without relief materials even a week after the incident. They also said two people lost their lives — one reportedly during police action and another when his house was burnt.

The opposition leaders also raised serious allegations regarding the demolition of the residence of Chief Executive Member Tuliram Ronghang during the unrest. They said the demolition may have destroyed potential evidence related to corruption or illegal activities. The memorandum demanded that the site be sealed and a judicial inquiry ordered.

The team further said the government failed to protect citizens in a sensitive tribal region, despite heavy security deployment. The memorandum called for fair compensation, rehabilitation support, and strict protection of Sixth Schedule tribal land rights, while also ensuring safety of non-tribal residents.

The delegation urged the Governor to ensure rule of law and accountability. They said the government must act in a fair and transparent manner so that public trust is restored and peace returns to the area.

The memorandum was signed by senior opposition leaders representing Congress, CPI, CPI(M), Raijor Dal, Assam Jatiya Parishad and others.
