Commuters faced severe traffic congestion on National Highway 27 near Greenwood Resort in Khanapara late Thursday night after a large amount of oil spilled onto the road, making it extremely slippery and hazardous for vehicles.
According to sources, the incident occurred when a large crane, traveling from Siliguri to Haflong, collided with another truck. The impact caused the crane’s oil chamber to rupture, spilling crude oil across the highway. The spill created slippery conditions that immediately disrupted traffic, particularly on the stretch from Guwahati towards Jorabat.
Motorists reported long delays as vehicles struggled to navigate the affected area. Khanapara Traffic Police rushed to the scene and spread sand over the slippery sections to prevent accidents and make the road safer. Traffic movement has since been partially restored, but authorities have urged drivers to proceed with caution until the road is completely cleared.
In a statement to the media, traffic authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported. They added that the cause of the truck collision is currently under investigation. Meanwhile, commuters are advised to avoid the area if possible and follow traffic instructions issued by the police.
A social media advisory from the police also highlighted a mechanical defect in one trailer and oil leakage near Ganesh Mandir, further contributing to the congestion. Officers are actively regulating traffic to ensure smooth passage and minimize risks.
