The Asomiya Yuva Mancha (AYM) today held a press conference highlighting alleged land issues near the proposed Zubeen Kshetra memorial in Sonapur. Akash Saikia, Central Assistant Secretary of AYM, spoke against Assam Cabinet Minister Ashok Singhal and two businessmen, Rajesh Jalal and Manoj Jalal, accusing them of occupying land adjacent to the memorial site.
At the press meet, Saikia said the youth group would not compromise on the matter. “We will die but there will be no compromise on Zubeen’s land,” he said, emphasizing the importance of preserving the area for the memorial. He demanded that the 48 bighas of land near Zubeen Kshetra, allegedly held by Singhal and the two businessmen, be vacated immediately.
Documents from the Revenue Department under Dimoria Circle revealed that plot number 112, measuring 29 bighas 14 lechas next to the memorial, is registered in the name of Minister Ashok Singhal. Saikia questioned how such a large piece of land in a tribal belt and under government oversight could be allocated to a private individual.
He also criticized the Assam government and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, asking why action had not been taken despite similar evictions happening elsewhere in the state. Saikia described the CM’s statement that he did not know the land’s ownership as “shameless and hurtful.”
The AYM leader further accused the state government of favouring non-Assamese and business communities. While only 10 bighas were originally allocated for Zubeen Kshetra, larger plots have allegedly been given to others. “In Zubeen Garg’s case, there will be no compromise. The land taken by Ashok Singhal and Manoj Jalal must be returned,” he said.
Saikia urged the Chief Minister to take immediate steps to ensure the land is restored for the memorial and expanded properly. He clarified that if the government wishes, the businessmen can retain the land they already hold, but the youth group will continue to demand justice for Zubeen Garg’s memorial.
