Mizoram welcomed the New Year with a quiet and peaceful celebration marked by church services, community gatherings and traditional feasts across the state on Thursday. The mood was calm and joyous as people came together to pray, sing and express gratitude while stepping into the New Year.

In the state capital Aizawl, as well as in towns and villages, churches organised thanksgiving services and worship programmes. Special prayers were offered, and large numbers of people took part in congregational singing, locally known as zaikhawm. Many people described the day as a time to reflect, give thanks and seek blessings for the year ahead.

Mizoram is a Christian-majority state, and the New Year is usually observed over two days. The celebrations therefore continued beyond Wednesday night, with several churches holding services again on Thursday. Families and neighbours also shared simple community meals, keeping alive local traditions of togetherness and fellowship.

Unlike loud or glittering celebrations seen in many other places, New Year in Mizoram is mostly centred around faith, family and community. The day passed peacefully, with people attending church in the morning and spending time with loved ones for the rest of the day.
