The Mizoram government has issued a stern warning against a planned blockade of National Highway 306, emphasizing the need to maintain public order and ensure uninterrupted supply of essential goods. NH-306, a vital link connecting Mizoram with Assam, serves as a key route for food, fuel, medicines, and other necessities. Authorities cautioned that any attempt to obstruct the highway could severely disrupt daily life across the state.
Officials said security agencies have been instructed to remain alert and prevent any unlawful gatherings or blockades along the highway. Community leaders, civil society organisations, and local student unions have also been urged to discourage actions that could escalate tensions or create public inconvenience.
Reports indicate that certain groups planned the blockade to press demands related to inter-state border issues and local grievances. While these groups claim peaceful intentions, the government stressed that protests must not compromise public safety or essential services. Chief Secretary Renu Sharma held a high-level meeting with police, district administrations, and transport authorities to review the situation. She instructed all departments to coordinate closely to maintain normal traffic and ensure public safety.
NH-306 is crucial for Mizoram’s economy and connectivity, as over 80% of goods entering the state from Assam pass through this route. Even a short disruption could lead to supply shortages, logistical challenges, price hikes, and delays in essential services. Authorities have coordinated with Assam officials to ensure smooth inter-state traffic and timely communication in case of emergencies.
State Home Minister Lalchamliana reiterated that law enforcement agencies will act decisively against anyone attempting to block the highway or provoke unrest. He appealed to the public to exercise restraint and seek peaceful dialogue for resolving grievances. “The government is open to discussions and peaceful negotiations, but any attempt to disturb normal life will invite strict legal action,” he said.
Security measures have been ramped up along sensitive stretches of NH-306, including Kolasib and Vairengte. Additional patrols, checkpoints, and drone surveillance have been deployed to monitor activity and ensure safe movement of vehicles. Quick-response teams are ready to clear any obstruction immediately.
