Governor’s Rule in the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) has been extended for another six months as the political situation in the council continues to remain uncertain, according to an official notification issued by the Mizoram government.

The decision was communicated through a notification released by the District Council and Minority Affairs Department on January 12, 2026. It stated that the Governor had earlier taken over all powers and functions of the CADC on July 7, 2025, for an initial period of six months. With that period now coming to an end, the Governor has decided to extend the arrangement in view of administrative and political considerations.

The notification explained that after the earlier term of Governor’s Rule expired, Lakkhan Chakma had staked his claim to be the third Chief Executive Member of the 11th Chakma Autonomous District Council. As required under Para 20BB of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, the matter was placed before the Council of Ministers. The Council advised that the claimant should be given an opportunity to prove his majority on the floor of the council.

The government also noted that there was no major political instability during the past six months, with the same political party continuing to claim majority support in the council. However, the Governor observed that the report of the Inquiry Commission related to the council is still awaited. It was further pointed out that frequent changes in political allegiance by elected members have created uncertainty, making it difficult to restore normal political functioning at this stage.

In view of these factors, the Governor decided that Governor’s Rule should continue in the CADC for another six months or until further orders. The extension has been made under the powers granted by Para 16(2) read with Para 20BB of the Sixth Schedule to the Constitution of India.

The notification also clarified that during this period, all powers and functions of the Chakma Autonomous District Council will continue to be exercised on behalf of the Governor by the Deputy Commissioner of Lawngtlai district. This arrangement will take effect from January 7, 2026.
