The Presidnet of the Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress Mira Borthakur Goswami today took a sharp dig at Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the Assam BJP, asking why the government is silent on serious allegations of job scams during the previous BJP regime.

The President of the Assam Pradesh Mahila Congress said the Chief Minister should clearly make public how many scams took place in government job appointments during the tenure of former Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. She said the BJP government is quick to point fingers at others but avoids answering uncomfortable questions about its own record.

Referring to a recent incident involving Rejaul Karim Sarkar, who had joined the Congress, the Mahila Congress leader said he made an incorrect statement and was immediately asked by the party to apologise. “Our leader Debabrata Saikia asked him to apologise, and he did so publicly,” she said. “The matter was closed there.”

She then raised a direct question to the Chief Minister. “Now the real issue is whether Himanta Biswa Sarma has the courage to ask Sarbananda Sonowal to apologise before the people of Assam for the cash-for-jobs scam that allegedly took place before 2021,” she said. “Himanta Biswa Sarma himself has said that government job appointments before 2021 involved money. If that is true, then who was responsible at that time?”

The Congress leader said it is normal in politics that a new government questions the previous one. “If in 2026 the BJP does not come back to power, the next Chief Minister will also speak about what happened under the present government. This is natural,” she said.

She added that Himanta Biswa Sarma frequently attacks the Indian National Congress on corruption but is now facing serious questions within his own party. “Today, a Chief Minister of the Bharatiya Janata Party is indirectly accusing another BJP Chief Minister of corruption. This itself shows that corruption did take place,” she said.

Referring to the BJP’s slogan of “Na kahunga, na khane dunga,” the Mahila Congress leader said the slogan sounds hollow now. “If there was no corruption during Sarbananda Sonowal’s tenure, he should come forward and say so clearly,” she said.

She also warned that political roles can change over time. “Tomorrow, Sarbananda Sonowal himself may speak about how much corruption took place under Himanta Biswa Sarma’s government. That day, the truth will come out again,” she said, adding that the Congress has consistently maintained that corruption did occur during the previous BJP government in Assam.
