Renowned social activist and environmentalist Medha Patkar has expressed deep sorrow over the sudden death of celebrated Assamese singer Zubeen Garg in Singapore, calling it a loss not just for Assam but for the entire nation. Speaking about the tragedy, Patkar said that the entire Assamese community is in shock and mourning the demise of the artist who dedicated his life to the people, rising above caste and religious divisions.
“Zubeen Garg was more than a singer. He was an artist who cared for people. He believed in dharma and karma. He lived among the people and always helped those in need,” Medha Patkar said. She also remembered the legendary singer’s contribution to music, noting that his 40,000 songs will always be cherished and remembered.
Patkar spoke about the importance of a fair and impartial investigation into Zubeen Garg’s death. “It is very sad that this happened. The investigation should be conducted without any bias. While the government is currently handling it, relying solely on a Special Investigation Team (SIT) is not enough. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) should also be involved to ensure impartiality. Only then can people have confidence in the results,” she added. 
The activist expressed surprise at the sudden influx of political and business leaders coming to meet Zubeen Garg’s family following his death. She stressed that while it is good for the public demand for justice to be heard, it is crucial that the investigation is thorough and unbiased. “If the demand of the people seeking justice is fulfilled, it will be good. Otherwise, the people will feel disappointed,” Patkar said.
