Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Saturday said that a huge quantity of drugs has been seized across the state over the last ten days following intensified operations by police and security forces.
The Chief Minister’s statement came a day after a major seizure at Jirania railway station in West Tripura district, where around 90,000 bottles of banned cough syrup were recovered from a goods train during a joint operation by security personnel.
Sharing details of the state’s ongoing anti-narcotics drive, Saha said in a post on X (formerly Twitter) that, “In the past ten days, the police and intelligence agencies have intensified anti-drug operations leading to recovery of 896 kg of ganja, 90,817 bottles of banned cough syrup, 180 Yaba tablets, and 27.78 grams of heroin.”
The Chief Minister lauded the relentless efforts of the police, Tripura State Rifles, and intelligence units for their coordinated work in tackling the growing menace of drug trafficking in the state. He reaffirmed the government’s firm commitment to making Tripura a drug-free state, emphasizing that the administration would continue to take strict action against those involved in the illegal drug trade.
Officials said that most of the seized substances were meant to be smuggled to other northeastern states and neighboring countries through Tripura’s porous international borders. The intensified surveillance and search operations at railway stations, border check posts, and inter-district routes have resulted in a series of successful interceptions in recent days.
Chief Minister Saha further urged citizens to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and report any suspicious activities related to drug smuggling. “This fight against drugs needs collective responsibility. Together, we can protect our youth and society from this menace,” he added.
