The Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) and Chhatra Mukti Sangram Samiti staged a strong protest in Sivasagar on Thursday against the Election Commission’s recent initiative of ‘Special Revision’ of electoral rolls in Assam. The move, which allows people coming from other states to vote even just two or three days before the elections, has sparked widespread concern among local groups.
The protesters gathered at Daulmukh Chariali, where they burned an effigy to express their disapproval of the initiative. A large number of members from both organizations actively participated, raising slogans like “Cancel the Election Commission’s decision,” “Down with BJP government,” and “Do not turn Assam into a stepping field.” The demonstration created a highly charged atmosphere in the heart of the town.
Leaders of KMSS said that allowing out-of-state mobile voters to participate in elections at the last moment undermines the local population’s voice. They argued that such measures could be politically motivated, particularly to influence the ground for the upcoming 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly elections. “We are concerned that these processes are being used to favor certain parties and weaken the rights of Assam’s residents,” a KMSS spokesperson said during the protest. 
Chhatra Mukti Sangram Samiti members also expressed strong opposition, stating that protecting Assam’s political and cultural integrity must remain a priority. They warned that permitting non-resident voters to participate at the last moment could have long-term consequences for the state’s democratic process.
