Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president and Jorhat MP Gaurav Gogoi on Tuesday criticised Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over his handling of the investigation into the death of popular singer and actor Zubeen Garg. Gogoi accused the state government of indulging in “credit-seeking politics” rather than ensuring justice.
Speaking at a Bokakhat Block Congress Committee meeting, Gogoi alleged that the Chief Minister was more focused on projecting himself than letting the legal process take its course. “The BJP’s approach in Zubeen Garg’s case reflects their politics of taking credit. Instead of allowing the court and SIT to complete the investigation, the Chief Minister seems eager to wrap up the matter for political mileage,” he said.
Gogoi also expressed concern over public statements made by the Chief Minister during the ongoing probe, warning that such remarks could influence public perception and undermine trust in fairness. “Zubeen Garg was not just a singer but a voice of Assam. What he deserves is justice, not politics,” he added.
The Congress leader also appealed the public to have patience and faith in the judicial process and called on the SIT to conduct its investigation independently, free from political interference. “Assam deserves better than turning sensitive issues into opportunities for self-promotion,” Gogoi said.
