‘Justice first, optics later’: AASU declines SIT invite in Zubeen Garg case

AASU further mentioned that it had learned from media reports that several other individuals had been invited to participate in the same discussion with the SIT.

The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has decided not to participate in the Special Investigation Team (SIT) meeting regarding the mysterious death of Assam’s beloved singer and artist, Zubeen Garg. The union said that its absence is meant to prevent the accused from exploiting any participation for legal advantages in court.

In a statement released on Monday, AASU president Utpal Sharma, general secretary Samiran Phukan, and chief advisor Dr. Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharjya clarified that the organization had consulted senior lawyers and advocates from the Gauhati High Court before making the decision. They said that attending the SIT meeting could create opportunities for the accused to question the impartiality of the investigation in court.

The student body has already sent a formal letter to the SIT chief, Special DGP (CID) Munna Prasad Gupta, explaining its decision. The letter stressed that the people of Assam are closely watching the probe and expect justice to be delivered quickly. “The investigation must be swift, transparent, and thorough,” the letter stated. AASU also urged the SIT to prepare a strong charge sheet backed by solid evidence and witness statements, ensuring that the guilty cannot escape punishment.

AASU further mentioned that it had learned from media reports that several other individuals had been invited to participate in the same discussion with the SIT. However, the union insisted that its leaders cannot attend at this stage without risking misuse by those accused in the case. “We cannot allow any such opportunity to those who stand against justice and truth,” the statement added.

Since Zubeen Garg’s death, AASU has been consistent in demanding strict action against the accused, including names such as Shyamkanu Mahanta, Siddharth Sharma, and Shekhar Goswami. The organization reaffirmed its firm stance in support of the people of Assam and the quest for justice for the late artist.

The student body said that while it will continue to monitor the investigation closely, it will not participate in any process that might indirectly help the accused.
