Questions have emerged after a document claiming to be the post-mortem report of late singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg began circulating on social media. The post-mortem, conducted at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) and returned to his wife Garima Saikia Garg, is a sensitive document. Its alleged online circulation has raised concerns about confidentiality and the ongoing investigation into his death.
Special Director General of Police (SDGP) Munna Prasad Gupta of Assam CID clarified on Wednesday that the circulating report is completely fake. Speaking to the media, he said, “The post-mortem report that has gone viral on social media is entirely false. It does not bear the signature of any doctor or medical officer who conducted the examination, nor does it have any official stamp or authentication. Such a document has no legal or procedural validity.”
Gupta added that the CID has identified the sources of some of the misleading posts and warned that strict legal action would be taken against those spreading misinformation. “We are monitoring social media, and if anyone is found spreading false information, strict action will be taken,” he said.
The circulation of the alleged report has drawn reactions from the public and fans of Zubeen Garg. Activist Lunijyoti Gogoi alleged that the Special Investigation Team (SIT), which is probing Garg’s untimely death in Singapore on September 19, is not taking the case seriously. Meanwhile, Lurin demanded immediate action, calling for the person responsible for leaking the report to be taken into custody within 24 hours.
SDGP Gupta reiterated that the post-mortem report is not a public document and will only be produced in court. Any reports claiming the release of the document at a certain time are false.
On the progress of the investigation, Gupta said five accused individuals, including Shyamkanu Mahanta and Siddharth Sharma, are being produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court today. Sushmita Goswami and Pratim Bhuyan have already appeared before the SIT to record their statements, while Devjyoti Hazarika is expected to appear soon.
The CID is also coordinating with authorities in Singapore regarding certain aspects of the case. “We received an email from the Singapore administration yesterday and have already responded. The communication has been positive, and we are expecting further cooperation soon,” Gupta added.
He assured the public that the investigation is progressing efficiently and that no effort is being spared to ensure a thorough and fair inquiry. So far, ten Assamese expatriates residing in Singapore have provided statements to the SIT.
