Hatigaon in spotlight: Himanta sounds alarm over BJP loss

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday issued a stark warning, saying that certain areas, including Hatigaon, could face serious challenges if the BJP does not remain in power in the state.

Speaking at a cabinet briefing, Sarma claimed that the BJP is acting as a protective barrier for indigenous communities against what he described as demographic pressures from specific groups. “All must be confident of one thing the day BJP ceases to be in power, Assam will be taken over by the Miyas. Those who curse the BJP will one day regret it, because we are standing as the embankment between the Miya and the indigenous people,” he said.

The Chief Minister’s comments come amid ongoing political debates in Assam and follow criticism of opposition parties, particularly the Congress. Sarma alleged that certain sections of the population, which he estimated at around 40 per cent, display aggressive behaviour and act without fear even under the current BJP government. He suggested that a return of the Congress would embolden these groups further.

Sarma also made allegations linking demographic changes to criminal activity. He claimed that some members of the Miya community have a history of violence, particularly against women, including cases of assault and murder. He stressed that BJP governance was essential to maintain peace and protect local communities.

The Chief Minister also named prominent opposition leaders, including Lurinjyoti Gogoi, Akhil Gogoi, and Gaurav Gogoi, accusing them of supporting the Miya community rather than prioritising Assamese interests. “Our role is to protect the indigenous people. Without BJP, this protection may not exist,” he added.
