The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has taken its first formal step in preparation for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections. The party has announced the name of its first candidate. Hafiz Bashir Ahmed Qasmi will contest from the Goalpara East Legislative Assembly Constituency. With this announcement, the party has begun its groundwork for the upcoming polls, which are still more than a year away.

This move follows recent statements made by party chief Badruddin Ajmal. On December 15, Ajmal told reporters in Guwahati that the AIUDF would contest the 2026 polls alone. He ruled out the possibility of joining hands with any opposition party, including the Congress. Ajmal said the party leadership had agreed to follow a solo strategy and would focus on strengthening its organisation across Assam before the elections.

According to Ajmal, the party wants to present its own agenda to the people instead of entering into alliances. He said the AIUDF intends to fight the elections independently to expand its base. Ajmal also claimed that the party will challenge the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party directly. He said the people of Assam will judge the performance of the present government and decide accordingly in 2026.

Ajmal also spoke about several political leaders. He dismissed Congress leaders Akhil Gogoi and Gaurav Gogoi and said they do not have a strong support base. He said that Akhil Gogoi won his last election by a narrow margin and expressed doubt about whether he could repeat that victory. At the same time, Ajmal added that he holds no personal grudges and would pray for Gogoi.
