The Guwahati Police have said that the city recorded a clear fall in criminal cases during the year 2025. According to the annual report, police action, quicker investigation and better coordination helped control crime and dispose of a large number of pending cases across the city.
In 2025, a total of 5,786 cases were registered in Guwahati. This number is much lower than 7,412 cases in 2024 and 9,393 cases in 2023. By the end of 2025, 2,882 cases were still pending. Police officials said that in 2021, there were more than 35,000 pending cases. Over the past four years, more than 32,000 cases have been disposed of, which has brought the pending number down to below 3,000.
The charge-sheet filing rate has also improved. In 2025, the filing rate was 68.34 percent. This was higher than 42.56 percent in 2024 and 19.13 percent in 2023. The police department considers this progress a major administrative improvement.
The conviction rate has also increased sharply. In 2021, the conviction rate was only 4 percent. But in 2025, it rose to 28.5 percent. Under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the conviction rate has gone up to 86.08 percent. Police officials said this shows better quality investigation and case handling after the new criminal law framework came into force.
Crimes against women also declined during the year. In 2025, a total of 1,854 cases were registered under this category. The numbers were 2,804 in 2024 and 3,752 in 2023. Police said that increased patrolling, prompt response and awareness activities helped control such cases. During the year, 2,118 people were arrested in connection with crimes against women.
Vehicle theft cases also showed a major drop. In 2025, there were 553 reported cases of vehicle theft. In comparison, there were 1,118 such cases in 2024 and 1,032 in 2023. Police arrested 239 persons linked to these crimes and recovered 267 vehicles. The recovery rate rose to 48.2 percent, compared to 34.8 percent in 2024 and 18.99 percent in 2023.
Mobile theft cases were also actively handled. Police registered 203 such cases, arrested 203 accused persons and recovered 1,159 mobile phones during the year.
The city police continued strong action against drugs under NDPS cases. In 2025, a total of 406 NDPS cases were registered and 555 people were arrested. The seized items included 11.919 kg of heroin, 529.301 kg of ganja, 9,865 NDPS capsules and 34,918 NDPS tablets. The total market value of the seized drugs has been estimated at Rs 28,86,77,250.
Cybercrime monitoring also continued through the Cyber Police Station at Panbazar. Police said that in earlier recovery operations, over Rs 6.28 crore had been returned to victims cheated through online fraud. In 2025, police registered 18 cybercrime cases and conducted 1,784 enquiry-related examinations. Awareness programmes were also carried out to educate the public.
Traffic management also saw improvement during the year. In 2025, Guwahati recorded 1,026 road accident cases. This number was lower than the 1,218 accident cases recorded in the previous year. Police also reported that on 31 December 2025, not a single road accident case was reported in the city. Even during major public events, normal traffic movement was maintained smoothly. During the year, the total amount collected as traffic fines stood at Rs 50,21,57,000.
