In a major crackdown on tax evasion, the Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI), Guwahati Zonal Unit, has arrested Shri Mukesh Agarwal, 46, for orchestrating large-scale illegal business operations in Assam. Agarwal, identified as the main operator behind M/s Balaji Concast and M/s Balaji Steel Rolling Mills, was found to have secretly manufactured and supplied MS Ingots and TMT Bars without issuing proper GST invoices.
Preliminary investigations estimate that this illegal activity resulted in a staggering tax evasion of approximately Rs. 83 crores. According to officials, Agarwal’s actions violate Section 16 of the Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) Act, 2017, which requires businesses to maintain proper documentation and invoicing for availing input tax credit.
Following his arrest, Agarwal was initially placed in departmental custody. His bail applications were rejected multiple times by the competent judicial authorities. He has now been sent to judicial custody for 14 days as the investigation continues.
