The Kamrup Metropolitan District Administration has issued a set of strict guidelines to maintain peace, order, and respect at the cremation site of the late music icon Zubeen Garg at Hatimura, Kamarkuchi in Guwahati. The move comes after large crowds continued to gather at the site following the singer’s cremation, with authorities expressing concern over the need to keep the place sacred and disciplined.
District Magistrate Sumit Sattawan issued an official order stating that the cremation ground will remain open to visitors every day from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Visitors will not be allowed to enter beyond these hours under any circumstances. The administration clarified that this rule is aimed at ensuring proper management of the site and maintaining its peaceful atmosphere, especially during night hours when monitoring becomes difficult.
In the same order, the District Magistrate strictly prohibited the consumption or distribution of alcohol, tobacco, or any intoxicating substance within or around the premises. “Entry will be strictly prohibited for anyone under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicants,” the order stated. This measure follows several reports of people attempting to offer liquor bottles as tributes, which many citizens and officials considered highly inappropriate.
The directive was framed after discussions with local residents, community leaders, and Zubeen Garg’s close well-wishers. According to officials, everyone agreed that the site must be treated with dignity and should serve as a place for peaceful remembrance rather than celebration or noise. “We want people to come, pay their respects, sit quietly, and leave the place in the same calm condition,” said an official from the district administration.
The order further instructed that police personnel and local administrative staff will oversee the enforcement of these new rules. Teams from nearby police stations have already been deployed to monitor the flow of visitors and to ensure that no one engages in activities that disturb the sanctity of the place. Banners displaying the new guidelines are also being installed at various entry points to remind visitors of the do’s and don’ts.
The cremation site of Zubeen Garg has quickly turned into an emotional landmark for his fans across Assam and beyond. Since the day of his funeral, people from different corners of the state have been arriving in large numbers to offer flowers, light candles, and sing his popular songs in tribute. Local vendors have set up small stalls nearby selling flowers, candles, and photos of the late singer. The atmosphere has been described as both mournful and deeply emotional, with many visitors still unable to come to terms with the sudden loss of one of Assam’s most beloved cultural figures.
However, in recent days, authorities noticed instances where some individuals were bringing bottles of alcohol to the site, claiming it to be part of their tribute to Zubeen Garg’s free-spirited lifestyle. This act drew widespread criticism from the public and political leaders alike. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also commented on the issue earlier this week, saying, “Zubeen Garg was an artist loved by millions. Offering alcohol or tobacco at his cremation site is not an act of respect. Please offer flowers and prayers instead.”
