Senior Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi has launched a scathing attack on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in Assam, raising serious questions over the citizenship status of two BJP MLAs and holding Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma responsible for what he described as the party’s “impending electoral decline” in the state.

Speaking to reporters, Gogoi alleged that doubts have been raised regarding the citizenship credentials of BJP legislators Bijoy Malaker and Kishore Nath, but the state government has failed to provide any clarity.

He accused the BJP of practicing double standards on citizenship issues. “When ordinary citizens are harassed in the name of citizenship verification, the BJP remains silent when serious questions are raised about its own MLAs. The Chief Minister’s silence speaks volumes,” Gogoi said.

The Congress leader further alleged that the BJP government has been using divisive politics to divert public attention from governance failures. He cited rising unemployment, price rise, and growing public dissatisfaction as factors eroding the BJP’s support base in Assam.

“Himanta Biswa Sarma has himself become the biggest liability for the BJP in Assam. His politics of fear, confrontation and intimidation will be the primary reason for the party’s defeat in the coming Assembly elections,” Gogoi asserted.

He added that the next elections would be fought on issues of accountability, governance and credibility, not rhetoric. The Congress, he said, would continue to raise concerns related to constitutional values, transparency and citizens’ rights.
