The Assam Congress has said that it is preparing to contest 100 seats in the upcoming Assembly elections in the state. Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Gaurav Gogoi said that the party is working on its strategy and that it will continue to coordinate with other opposition parties for the remaining seats. He also said that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) would be formed against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma if the Congress comes to power.

Gaurav Gogoi said that, as of now, there has been no discussion within the opposition alliance about finalising candidates for each seat. He stated that the Congress has decided that it will field candidates in 100 constituencies across Assam. For the rest of the seats, he said that discussions will take place among the opposition parties before any final decision is made. Gogoi said that these decisions would be taken jointly and that the Congress wants to keep the spirit of the alliance intact.

Gogoi said, “There has been no discussion regarding candidate selection within the opposition alliance. In the upcoming Assembly elections, the Congress will contest 100 seats. For the remaining seats, candidates will be finalized only through discussions among the opposition parties.”

The APCC president also launched a sharp attack on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He said that the Chief Minister is making irresponsible remarks because he can sense growing public dissatisfaction.Gogoi said that the ruling leadership is becoming nervous ahead of the upcoming polls. He claimed that the Chief Minister is worried about losing political ground and therefore has started reacting strongly to criticism from the opposition.

Gogoi further said that if the Congress forms the next government in Assam, it will set up a Special Investigation Team to look into various matters related to the current Chief Minister. He said, “Seeing a dark future ahead, the Chief Minister has broken down. That is why he has started speaking irresponsibly. When our government comes to power, we will form an SIT. The APCC president Gaurav Gogoi has warned that a Special Investigation Team will be set up against the Chief Minister when the Congress forms the government.”

Earlier, on November 21, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had said that, considering the present demography in Assam, the BJP and its allies are in a position to contest in 103 out of the total 126 Assembly seats in the upcoming elections. However, the Chief Minister also clarified that this does not mean the BJP will not contest the remaining seats. He described those seats as “token contests,” indicating that the focus of the ruling party would largely remain on the 103 seats where it believes it is strongest.
