Gauhati High Court admits writ petition against Doordarshan officials Gauhati High Court admits writ petition against Doordarshan officials

The Gauhati High Court has admitted a writ petition filed by a group of journalists against senior officials of Doordarshan. The petition is registered as WPC (C) 16471/2025. The petitioners include Kunja Mohan Roy, a senior journalist and president of the Assam Pradesh Journalist Union, and several other part-time correspondents (PTCs) of Prasar Bharati (All India Radio).

The petition has been filed against DG News, Doordarshan, New Delhi, along with six other high-ranking officials of the Regional News Unit (RNU) of Doordarshan Kendra, Guwahati. The petitioners claim that they were deprived of their services illegally, even though they have served the RNU section at Doordarshan Kendra, Guwahati, for nearly 17 years.

According to the petition, there are clear Rules and Guidelines of Doordarshan (News) which state that PTCs of Prasar Bharati (AIR) are eligible to be engaged for Doordarshan News services. The petitioners allege that despite this rule, RNU, DDK, Guwahati empanelled new news stringers in June this year. As a result, the PTCs who had been serving for many years were removed from their duties and deprived of opportunities.

It has further been alleged in the petition that several full-time correspondents working in private news channels were empanelled as Doordarshan stringers. The petition claims that such appointments violate the rules of Prasar Bharati and are contrary to the service norms followed by the organisation.

The case was confirmed by Assam Press Correspondents’ Association president Mohan Boruah. He stated that the petition was formally submitted before the High Court earlier this month. Six journalists, who had been working for almost 17 years on a temporary basis under Prasar Bharati’s regional and Doordarshan centres, have complained that they were removed from duty without any proper process.

According to the details in the complaint, the Guwahati Doordarshan News wing placed these journalists in the third category during the empanelment process in June. After this re-classification, they were removed from the responsibilities they previously handled.

The petitioners further argued before the court that the authorities had failed to regularise their jobs over the years, despite their long service period. Instead of addressing their job security, the authorities allegedly terminated their engagement. The complainants claim that this action violates established employment policies of Prasar Bharati and undermines their rights as long-serving journalists.
