The Guwahati Literature Festival 2025 began today celebrating Assam’s art, culture and public service. But the most special moment of the day came when Dr Abhijit Sarma, former Superintendent of Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), was honoured with the GLF Jeevandaan Award 2025. The award was given during the inaugural ceremony held at S.B. Deorah College Auditorium at Ulubari in Guwahati.
Students, writers, artists, academicians and members of the public stood to applaud Dr Sarma in the college auditorium. Many people in the audience had seen him work tirelessly during difficult times in Assam’s healthcare system, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic and other medical emergencies when he led GMCH with calm determination and compassion.
Dr Abhijit Sarma has long been known as one of the most dedicated healthcare leaders in Assam. As Superintendent of GMCH, he played a key role in improving the hospital’s services, introducing stronger emergency response systems, and ensuring that patients who came to the hospital in critical situations received timely treatment. Doctors, nurses and medical staff often speak of his leadership style; simple, disciplined and always focused on patient care.
Even after stepping down from his official post, Dr Sarma continued to work for the welfare of the community, supporting families in medical need, guiding young medical students, and taking part in various health-awareness programmes across Assam. Many people say that his work is not just about medicine, but about humanity and kindness. That is why the Jeevandaan Award, which recognises individuals who dedicate their lives to the service of others feels very fitting for him.
Speaking at the ceremony, festival organisers praised Dr Sarma’s contribution to society. They said that he has given “life and hope to many people” through his medical work and leadership. While receiving the award, Dr Sarma thanked the organisers and the people of Assam. He said that serving the public has always been his duty and honour, and he hopes to continue contributing in any way he can.
This year’s Guwahati Literature Festival carries a special emotional theme, as it celebrates the life and legacy of the late Assamese cultural icon Zubeen Garg. The festival opened with soulful Borgeet performances, followed by tributes to Zubeen, who has touched millions of lives through his music and humanitarian work.
Writers and scholars like Dr Dhrubajyoti Borah, Yeshe Dorjee Thongchi, Dr Kuladhar Saikia and Dr Surjya Hazarika addressed the gathering. They spoke about the importance of carrying forward Assam’s cultural spirit and remembering those who dedicated themselves to the betterment of society, be it through art or public service.
The Guwahati Literature Festival is not only about books and discussions. It is a platform where different walks of life come together; literature, music, healthcare, public administration, youth leadership and social service. This year’s awardees included writers, administrators, artists, and social workers. Along with Dr Sarma, Major Hariman Deka also received the Jeevandaan Award jointly.
The 2025 edition of the festival has come at a time when Assam is still recovering from the emotional loss of Zubeen Garg. Organisers shared that this year’s theme is about love, memory, and carrying forward cultural values. A special session titled “Bhupen Hazarika and Zubeen Garg — Their Song, Poetry, and Humanism” touched the hearts of many.
