Five workers were killed and three others were seriously injured after a chimney at a brick kiln fell on them in Kamalpur area of Dhalai district in Tripura on Wednesday. The kiln was operating when the structure suddenly gave way.
According to local reports, the workers were engaged in routine work when a large portion of the chimney structure gave way without warning. Eyewitnesses said there was a loud sound, followed by thick dust and debris falling over the labourers. People working nearby rushed to alert authorities.
The injured workers were moved first to a nearby health facility and then shifted to Govind Ballabh Pant Medical College and Hospital in Agartala for better treatment. Hospital officials said the condition of some injured workers remains critical, and they are under observation.
Teams from the Fire and Emergency Services and the State Disaster Response Force reached the site soon after receiving information. They were joined by local residents who helped remove bricks and debris to reach the trapped workers. The rescue teams recovered the bodies and helped transport the injured to hospitals. Officials later confirmed the casualty count.
Following the incident, Kamalpur police detained the brick kiln’s owner, identified as Souvik Paul, along with the manager of the unit. Police officials said a case has been registered, and an inquiry will determine whether negligence led to the tragedy. Authorities also began inspecting the safety standards and operating conditions at the brick kiln.
