A tense search operation is underway along the Brahmaputra River near Kharguli after five persons were reported missing on Wednesday afternoon. Rescue personnel from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been pressed into action and are continuing efforts late into the evening, as families wait anxiously on the riverbank.
According to preliminary information, the five individuals were last seen near the riverbank earlier in the day.
Soon after the information reached authorities, an SDRF team arrived at the location and started combing both sides of the river using boats and search equipment suited for deep-water areas.
Earlier on November 6, the body of 11-year-old Prem Sah was recovered near Sukreswar Ghat after an extensive two-day operation by the SDRF. According to officials, Prem, a resident of Punjabi Colony in Islampur, had gone to bathe in the river with friends on November 4. When he failed to return, a massive search began the next day. His body was eventually spotted near the ghat and handed over to Panbazar police.
