All five candidates who submitted their nomination papers for the Dampa Assembly by-election in Mizoram’s Mamit district have successfully passed the scrutiny process, election officials confirmed on Wednesday. The bypoll is scheduled to take place on November 11, and the election machinery is now gearing up for a smooth and transparent voting process.

According to Mizoram Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Lalrozama, the nomination papers were carefully examined by Returning Officer Malsawmzuala, and all submissions were found valid. The five cleared candidates are Vanlalsailove from the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), R. Lalthangliana representing the Mizo National Front (MNF), John Rotluangliana of the Indian National Congress, Lalhmangaiha from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and K. Zahmingthanga of the People’s Conference (PC).

The last date for withdrawal of candidature has been fixed for Friday, giving candidates two more days to make a final decision on contesting. CEO Lalrozama informed that the Election Commission has deployed three observers from the Centre to monitor the entire process and ensure fairness during the bypoll.

He further mentioned that the model code of conduct is being strictly enforced in Mamit district and nearby areas. “So far, there have been no reports of any violations or complaints from any political party or candidate,” he said.

The by-election was necessitated due to the death of sitting MNF MLA Lalrintluanga Sailo on July 21, leaving the Dampa seat vacant. The constituency has a total of 20,790 registered voters, including 10,185 women, who will cast their votes on November 11 to elect a new representative.

Election officials said preparations are in full swing, with arrangements being made for safe, inclusive, and peaceful polling. Awareness drives are also being carried out to encourage high voter turnout. Security has been tightened in key areas to prevent any disturbances during the campaign period.
