Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi on Sunday strongly criticised the BJP for what he described as politics based on fear, division and discrimination, while addressing a public meeting in Guwahati where several political and community leaders formally joined the Congress party.
Speaking at the Manavendra Sharma Complex in the city, Gogoi said the Congress believes in courage, unity and respect for all sections of society, unlike the BJP which, he alleged, survives by creating fear among people. He said the BJP’s politics goes against the wishes of the common people and harms social harmony by repeatedly raising issues related to caste, religion and identity.
Gogoi thanked party workers, supporters and new entrants for standing with him and said he had drawn strength from people’s love and trust. He said fear has no place in democratic politics and added that he personally believes in facing challenges with honesty and faith. “Politics should give confidence to people, not scare them,” he said.
Highlighting the growing support for the Congress, Gogoi said many leaders were joining the party because they were unhappy with the present style of governance. He said people across Assam were looking for a political alternative that listens to their problems and works sincerely to solve them. According to him, the Congress remains committed to protecting the rights and dignity of every citizen, irrespective of caste, religion or background.
Gogoi said the BJP government has failed to address key issues faced by ordinary people and instead focuses on creating distractions. He said unemployment, price rise and social insecurity continue to trouble families, but the ruling party avoids serious discussion on these matters.
The Congress leader also appealed to party members to remain united and work together for a better future. He said unity within the party and among people is the only way to defeat divisive forces. “We must stand together and move forward together,” he told the gathering.
