A major controversy has erupted in Nagarbera under Boko subdivision of Kamrup district after serious allegations surfaced against Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP-P) Dipak Sharma. The officer is accused of creating panic and disturbance at the venue of the historic Nagarbera Ras Mahotsav on Friday evening.
According to local witnesses, the DSP allegedly moved through several stalls inside the fairground and was seen threatening some shopkeepers. A few traders claimed that he even demanded money through his driver. Some of them further alleged that the officer damaged their stalls and misbehaved with them. The sudden incident reportedly left many people shocked and frightened at what was meant to be a peaceful cultural celebration.
The Nagarbera Ras Mahotsav Celebration Committee, which has been organizing the traditional event for decades, expressed deep disappointment over the officer’s alleged actions. The committee members said the Ras Mahotsav is not just a fair but a respected cultural event that brings together people from all communities. They condemned the alleged misconduct and urged the district administration to investigate the matter properly.
As the news of the incident spread, hundreds of angry residents gathered outside the Nagarbera Police Station late Friday night. The crowd, shouting slogans like “DSP Dipak Sharma Go Back” and “We Want Justice,” surrounded the police station for several hours. The protestors demanded that strict disciplinary action be taken against the officer and said they would not tolerate any misuse of police power.
The situation grew tense for some time, but senior officials quickly intervened to control the unrest. Kamrup District Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sanjib Saikia contacted the president and general secretary of the Ras Mahotsav Committee over the phone and assured them that the issue would be discussed seriously. He also promised that necessary action would be taken after a fair review of the facts.
