The Kuki-Zo Council has welcomed the upcoming visit of President Droupadi Murmu to Manipur and has urged her to take note of the continued suffering of the Kuki-Zo families who remain displaced after months of ethnic violence in the state. The President will be in Manipur for two days from December 11, and she is expected to attend events in Imphal as well as Senapati district.
In a statement, the council said that the visit of the President holds deep importance at a time when many people are still struggling with the impact of the conflict. The council said that the presence of the President offers a sense of hope to families who continue to live in relief camps and are yet to return to their homes.
The council pointed out that many displaced families have been waiting for a long time for justice and rehabilitation. It said that the community has lived through months of insecurity and fear, and many families have lost homes, livelihoods and access to basic services. The council added that the community is still facing threats and uncertainty.
Although the President will be visiting Imphal and Senapati, the Kuki-Zo Council said it would have been important for her to visit areas where Kuki-Zo families are staying, especially the places where relief camps are located. The council said that it hopes the President, who belongs to a tribal background herself, will try to understand the struggles of the affected families.
