Congress MP from Dhubri, Rakibul Hussain today said that Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is “not eligible” to hold the office of Chief Minister and warned that he would face punishment in the future. Hussain made the remarks during a large party joining event in Dhubri.

Speaking to a packed gathering, Hussain said, “Himanta Biswa Sarma is not eligible to be Chief Minister. The oath taken while assuming office is not being followed. No law may act against him now, but soon he will be punished.” The MP’s comments come amid heightened political activity in the state ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.

The joining ceremony witnessed a significant influx of leaders and workers, with over 1,000 members from the BJP, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), and AIUDF formally joining the Congress. Senior leaders including MP Rakibul Hussain, MLAs Wazed Ali Choudhury and Abdus Sobahan Ali Sarkar, and several district-level Congress officials were present to welcome the new members.

Hussain also criticised the BJP-led Assam government for what he called “large-scale misuse of public funds,” alleging that Chief Minister Sarma had turned governance into “a spectacle of self-promotion.” He particularly took aim at the government’s recent move to grant Scheduled Tribe status to six communities, describing it as a “politically driven decision” that lacked genuine concern for indigenous rights.

He further raised concerns over the expenditure of Rs 20 crore on stages and pandals for the Mukhya Mantri Udyamita Abhiyan (MMUA) events held across Assam. “Why is the people’s tax money being wasted on such extravagance?” Hussain asked.
