A local Congress leader in Assam’s Sribhumi district allegedly attacked a party colleague with a sharp-edged weapon at a restaurant where they had gone for snacks after a party meeting on Monday, people familiar with the matter said.
The victim has been identified as 35-year-old Jillur Nur, a local Congress functionary from the Umorpur area of Sribhumi district. According to party leaders, the incident took place on Monday evening, sometime after a Congress meeting attended by senior leaders in the Nilambazar area had ended.
After the meeting, some party members reportedly went to a nearby restaurant for snacks. It was there that an argument broke out between Nur and another Congress leader, identified as Shahanaz Hussain, who is also known to be a ticket aspirant for the upcoming state elections. During the altercation, Hussain allegedly attacked Nur with a sharp-edged weapon.
Police said the incident happened at around 6:30 pm. Nur sustained serious injuries to his hand and chest and collapsed soon after the attack. He was first taken to Sribhumi Civil Hospital, but due to the severity of his injuries, he was later referred to Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH), where he is now undergoing treatment.
Sribhumi district Congress president Tapash Purkayastha confirmed the incident and said the party strongly condemned the attack. However, he clarified that the stabbing did not occur during the party meeting itself, but afterwards at the eatery. He said there may have been personal issues between the two individuals, but the party will still look into the matter and take necessary action.
Police have launched a search for the main accused, Shahanaz Hussain, who has gone missing since the incident. Officers said they are still investigating the exact circumstances that led to the attack and are yet to record full statements from those present at the restaurant.
Senior police officials have been contacted for further details, but no formal statement has yet been issued.
This attack has once again highlighted internal tensions within the Congress in the area, especially at a time when election-related activities are increasing. Local residents say such incidents create fear and confusion among party workers and the public.
