In Tripura, Congress Legislature Party (CLP) chief and former state party president Birajit Sinha accused Social Welfare Minister Tinku Roy of sheltering an illegal Bangladeshi national and concealing key details in his election affidavit.
Sinha claimed that a Bangladeshi citizen named Sanjay Chakraborty had worked as a cook at Roy’s residence during the Durga Puja celebrations. He further alleged that Chakraborty was involved in helping two Bangladeshi women, including a minor girl, to cross the international border illegally into Indian territory. According to Sinha, both women were later detained by authorities and had mentioned Chakraborty’s name during interrogation.
The Congress leader said the accused has now changed his identity and is using the name Dipak Chakraborty. He added that the incident is not an isolated one but points to a larger problem of illegal immigration that the state government has failed to address.
Sinha said he has written to Chief Minister Manik Saha and the state’s Director General of Police (DGP), demanding a detailed investigation into the incident. “This case shows how foreign nationals are being given shelter and protection by those in power,” Sinha alleged, calling it a serious breach of law and national security.
Apart from the immigration issue, Sinha also levelled personal allegations against Minister Tinku Roy. He claimed that Roy did not disclose a criminal case filed against him by a local journalist in his election affidavit, which, he said, amounts to a violation of the Representation of the People Act.
Sinha further questioned the authenticity of the minister’s academic qualification, alleging that Roy’s Class XII certificate was issued by an unrecognised board in Madhya Pradesh. “Voters have the right to know the truth about their representatives. Suppressing facts in an election affidavit is a punishable offence,” Sinha said.
