The Congress party on Friday organised a candlelight march in Sivasagar demanding justice for late singer Zubeen Garg and calling for a speedy and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
The march was led by Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi, Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Debabrata Saikia, and former Union Minister Pawan Singh Ghatowar. Hundreds of party workers and supporters joined the event, holding candles and singing Zubeen’s popular songs as they walked through the town.
Addressing the gathering, Gaurav Gogoi said the aim of the march was to ensure justice for the beloved artist and to press for a fast-track probe. “We want the investigation to proceed in the correct manner and at an accelerated pace. As Garima Saikia Garg herself has said, the inquiry should be fast-tracked, and we echo the same sentiment,” he said.
Gogoi criticised the government over the handling of the case, particularly in connection with accused event manager Shyamkanu Mahanta. He alleged that the delayed arrest allowed Mahanta to approach the Supreme Court. “If Shyamkanu Mahanta had been arrested immediately after the incident, he would not have had the chance to appeal. But because he was given a 10-day window, he managed to do so. We urge the government not to repeat such mistakes in future investigations,” Gogoi remarked.
The APCC president also underlined that the candlelight vigil was not a one-time event but part of a larger campaign. He announced that similar marches will be held in different parts of the state in the coming days, including during Lakshmi Puja. “We stand with the family of Zubeen Garg and with his fans. Our marches will continue until justice is served,” he said.
In his address, Gogoi further accused the government of prioritising syndicates over public welfare. He also appealed for the release of individuals like Victor Das and Ajay Phukan, who, according to the Congress, were wrongly charged in the case. “These young people are not at fault. They should not be made scapegoats,” he added.
