During today’s Parliament session, Deputy Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha, Gaurav Gogoi formally urged the Central Government to confer the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour on the late Assamese singer-composer and cultural ambassador Zubeen Garg.

Raising the matter on the floor of the House, Gogoi highlighted Garg’s unparalleled contribution to Indian music, his role in promoting Assamese and Northeast identity on the national stage and his massive humanitarian work, saying the honour would be a fitting tribute to a “music maestro who united hearts across the country.”

The demand places the ball squarely in the BJP-led Union Government’s court marking the second major political push in recent weeks for posthumously honouring Zubeen Garg with the Bharat Ratna. Earlier, Congress Legislative Party leader in Assam, Debabrata Saikia, had moved a similar resolution in the recently concluded session of the Assam Legislative Assembly.
