A fresh wave of confusion has spread across the Tezpur University community after the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India, published an official Facebook post identifying Prof. Dhruba Kumar Bhattacharya as the Vice Chancellor of the university.
This public mention has surprised many because it appears to go directly against the position earlier taken by the Ministry of Education, which had clearly stated that Prof. Bhattacharya does not hold any administrative authority in the university.
Students, teachers and other stakeholders say this contradiction has added to the already tense situation on campus.
In a statement, members of the Tezpur University community said that such inconsistency shows a serious lack of coordination between two important Central ministries. They pointed out that the university has already been going through a long phase of administrative uncertainty, and these mixed signals from the Centre have only created more doubt and instability.
The community stated that Tezpur University is currently experiencing what they describe as “administrative paralysis” along with an ongoing movement by different stakeholders. They feel that at such a sensitive time, the government should be sending clear messages instead of contradictory ones.
The situation has become more complicated after the Ministry of Education recently appointed Prof. Amarendra Kumar Das as Pro Vice-Chancellor. This appointment was made without referring to the role or status of Prof. Dhruba Kumar Bhattacharya, who is the senior-most professor in the university. As per the Tezpur University Act, the senior-most professor is allowed to act as Vice Chancellor in the absence of a permanent head.
Members of the University community say this raises concerns about whether due process and statutory rules are being followed. They have also questioned whether the Centre is fully committed to restoring transparent and orderly governance in the institution.
In their statement, they have openly asked what the Government of India is trying to do in this situation. They questioned whether these contradictions are due to official carelessness or whether they show a deeper lack of concern about the ongoing crisis in a central university of the North-East.
They added that repeated confusion in administrative decisions gives the impression that the issue is not receiving the level of seriousness it deserves. According to them, this reinforces the long-standing feeling in the region that decision-makers in Delhi remain distant from the ground reality of the North-East.
The stakeholders of Tezpur University have urged the Central Government to immediately issue a clear and unified clarification on who holds leadership and administrative authority in the university. They have also called for more coordinated and responsible action from all ministries involved.
